Free Online Graphing Calculator

Plotline is a free online graphing calculator: type an equation such as y = x² or x² + y² = 25 and it is plotted instantly, with sliders, zoom and one-click examples.

How to use the graphing calculator

  1. Type an equation in the first row, for example y = 2x + 1. The graph appears as you type.
  2. Press Enter to add another equation; each one gets its own color.
  3. Use a letter such as a in y = a·x² and tap "add slider" to animate it.
  4. Drag to move the graph, scroll or pinch to zoom, and tap the crosshair to reset the view.
  5. Open the Examples tab on the keypad for ready-made graphs you can edit.

What you can do

  • Plot y = f(x), x = f(y), circles and any implicit equation
  • Shade inequalities such as y > x² − 3
  • Polar (r = 3 sin 4θ) and parametric curves
  • Sliders for variables, with play/animate
  • Trace points, pan and zoom, reset view
  • Save graphs and share them with a link

Examples

y = x² − 4a parabola crossing the x-axis at −2 and 2
x² + y² = 16a circle of radius 4
y > x² − 3the shaded region above a parabola
r = 3 sin(4θ)an eight-petal polar rose

Frequently asked questions

How do I graph an equation online?

Open Plotline, type the equation (for example y = x^2 or x^2 + y^2 = 25) into the first row, and the graph appears instantly. Press Enter to add more equations.

What kinds of equations can Plotline graph?

Functions like y = sin(x), equations in x and y like circles and ellipses, inequalities with shading, polar equations using θ, parametric curves (x(t), y(t)), points, and your own functions such as f(x) = x^3 − 3x.

Is Plotline a free alternative to Desmos?

Plotline is an independent, free online graphing calculator that covers the everyday features students use: graphing equations, sliders, inequalities, polar graphs, a scientific calculator and a matrix calculator. It is not affiliated with Desmos.

How do I add a slider?

Use a letter that is not x or y in an equation, such as y = a·x^2. Plotline offers an "add slider" button for a; drag it or press play to animate the graph.

Is Plotline free?

Yes. Plotline is completely free, needs no account or sign-up, and has no ads inside the calculators.

Does Plotline work offline and on phones?

Yes. Plotline works in any modern browser on phones, tablets, Chromebooks and computers. You can install it as an app from Chrome or Safari, and after the first visit it also works offline.

Who made Plotline?

Plotline is an independent project made by Aalok. For questions, ideas or feedback, email aalok.builds@gmail.com.
